Although today it doesn't feel like it. We're on the temperature roller coaster (again) and today it is going up. By Sunday it is supposed to be down again.

Here are a couple of links I liked today --

Flying the deceased in Alaska, which made me think of the sequel working I have to Northern Light, in which House is an Alaska bush pilot. The sequel is one of those WIPs that is SO CLOSE to being finished, and yet. I don't know why this has happened more and more often the older I get. :-P

All the things that are womens' fault, by Rebecca Solnit. I laughed out loud at some of this, but. Yeah.

Finished Lev Grossman's The Magician's Land and loved it, although I did think at least one plot point got wrapped up a little too neatly, and I definitely considered the possibility that the author had actually truly forgotten about it until the last minute and then realized he needed to say something. I do recommend the entire trilogy -- it was a great read and I thoroughly enjoyed each book.

Read Michael Wallis' David Crockett: The Lion of the West, which was a pretty interesting biography of ... Davy Crockett. For those who might be interested, it also serves as a good introduction to the history of Scots-Irish settlement in Tennessee and the Eastern Seaboard. I must say that none of the "founding fathers" of Texas come off very well in this book. Which is something I already basically knew, but ... ouch.

Now reading Stephen King's It, which I read when it came out. I don't remember very much of it, and I wanted to read something spooky during October, so here we are.

 That was this morning.

I have a personal and a business Facebook for business reasons; deleting would not be a good plan. I have a Twitter, an Instagram, two Tumblr accounts, a Pinterest (and not a damn clue what to do with it).

I found the settings on my phone and iPad and shut down notifications for all of it. No more vibrations or pings when someone comments. No more little red circle nagging me into checking on the 17 new whatevers that just happened.

It’s been one day and I already feel saner. Would recommend. We’ve all been “pushed” enough, I think.

I wrote to my sister. Among her many "problems" is an allergy to radiation/vibration/whatever that comes out of cell phones and computer towers. When she's stayed with my mom, she's disconnected the computer tower. Since Mom's 93, that means one of us has to come and connect it again.  I tried to arrange something to meet with her the day of a big march while she was on a visit to NYC. I kept telling her she needed to use Mom's cell phone if she expected us to connect. We had a major fight. Come the march, of course I can't hear my cell phone. I get a raging, hysterical message that I've forced Rachel to compromise her health by making her carry a cell phone...

So, she wrote back that she's having a terrible time and is at her wit's end. I'm presuming she's still renting the couch. I feel sorry for the people she's staying with. None of us could stick it for more than a week before she'd be back out on the street. As I might have written before, she had a fall-out with Mom last year and is now impatiently waiting for her to die.  JEEZ...

Between that and the world situation, I've spent a lot of my time continuing to read and write fanfic. It's a total escape. If only the good TV shows would come on.

I've also managed to write some non-fiction. An essay on handling a gun while I was in Memphis, and some stuff about my father. A friend on FB started a support group, And Today..? where you can report your doings. I've written some intimate stuff there about writing that I wouldn't post on ordinary FB. Mainly how writing/thinking about my childhood makes me physically ill. It's very frustrating. I want to write about it before I get much older.
